For many reasons, I found myself unexpectedly in Little Rock, Arkansas for few weeks. Although I spent a large portion of my youth in the south (Georgia and Florida - although that latter is more geographically the south than culturally), it's been several years since I've experienced its heat, humidity, food and culture.
Highlights: delicious fried foods (catfish and shrimp from the Flying Fish above - they also have a really great seafood gumbo), sweet tea, odd historical finds (below), Waffle House, magnolias, and that famous Southern Hospitality.
Lowlights: Everything fried and delicious, humid heat, insects, no Yuengling :(, limp salads, skipped workouts.
Overall not a bad time. Most o my time was spent eating, which is a pretty worthwhile endeavor at the right places. If you want to try some of the best barbecue in the South, I highly recommend the Whole Hog Cafe. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
For now, I'm on my way back to LA, ironically into a heat wave, albeit with low humidity. Wish me luck traversing through the nightmare that is LAX.
